Find what's similar. Decide what's better.
Every listing site now promises to show you homes 'just like this one.' I picked a dream house I can't afford, fed it to six similarity engines, and scored how close each one got to the same look, layout, and feel in neighborhoods I could actually swing. Here's where machine matching shines and where a boring filter still beats it.
I styled five outfits from my own closet, snapped photos, and challenged four visual fashion search apps to find cheaper lookalikes. Here's who found the dupe — and who just found more expensive jackets.
Burst mode is a liar — it promises you'll love all 47 shots of the same wave. I dumped my bloated vacation library into six duplicate and similar-photo finders to see which ones actually found the twins, which ones nearly deleted my keepers, and which one earned a spot on my Mac for good.
Music similarity tools promise your next favorite band, but some of them just hand you the radio edit. I started from five wildly different artists — including one hyperpop act with 12,000 monthly listeners — and followed each engine until it ran out of road.
We spent two weeks pointing our phones at everything from a stranger's velvet sofa on the L train to a sad fern in a Brooklyn apartment, testing six identification apps to see which ones actually deliver. Here's what nailed the lookup — and what left us guessing.
We tested seven apps that promise to find near-identical products at lower prices, running them against real browsing sessions for sneakers, headphones, and a living room couch. Only a few actually saved us money — the rest mostly sold us sponsored lookalikes.
We ran Google Lens, TinEye, Bing Visual Search, and a few niche contenders through three real-world tests: busting fake product listings, hunting down hi-res photos, and finding shoppable lookalikes. Here's how each tool scored on accuracy, speed, privacy, and free-tier limits.
